Things to consider when writing the title tag:

Example of a good title tag. Ideally, the company name would NOT come first, but otherwise it is a good example of a title tag done well.
  • Have a different title tag for each page - otherwise you are telling the search engines that each page serves the same purpose.
  • Place your keywords for the page into it. Title tag is the most important factor in deciding if search words match the page.
  • Make sure the most important keyword is at the beginning. "Lighting services from Acme in Seattle" is better than "Acme lighting services, Seattle" because you want people who don't yet know your company name to find you, so put the most likely search words first!
  • Should be shorter than 65 characters. Anything more than that is ignored by search engines and looks a little odd in the top title bar of the browser when someone is visiting your page.
  • Don't stuff the title tag with dozens of keywords. Keep it short and easy to read. If you need more keywords to describe what the page is all about, split it up into two or more pages.
  • Avoid duplicate words. "Life coaching and other coaching services" repeats the word "coaching". Better to have "Life coaching and related services" or take the opportunity to use a similar word "Life coaching and other counseling services". Use the words you know searching people use.
