SEO and Page Title tag: Just how important is it?
The importance of the Page Title to search results
The first order of business in getting your page to appear early in search results is matching the words on your website with the search words that people use to find products or services like yours.
And probably the most important text on your web page is that which appears on the top of the browser when you are viewing that page. That text comes from a specific place in the HTML of the web page; it is called the Title Tag.
Let's look at an example:
Enter the words "strategies international" into Google search. As it turns out, "Strategies International" is the first two words in the page title of a 2 month old website www.strategiesintl.com. Stragegies International's website appears as the 6th item on page 1 of search results, even with a PageRank of zero. That's how powerful Page Title is to search engines. (By the way: A PageRank of zero is actually zero-point-something - Google does not say what the actual number is - just the rounded down integer).
To give you an idea of just how simple this is, the following line (in bold font) is the fourth line of HTML in Strategies International's home page:
<title>Strategies International</title>
The Title Tag is perhaps the most significant influence on keyword matching in search results.
This illustrates how absolutely critical it is that you place your very best keywords in first position of the title tag of the web page that you want to appear higher on search results. Yes, your PageRank plays a role too, as do a number of other factors, but title tag on the page is the most important keyword location as far as search engines are concerned. Another very important source of keywords is the domain name.
